GPS/Location states

GPS signal is very important for correct navigation process. It allows to calculate your current and a target position, left distance to the target and your speed of walk. We put great emphasis on getting the right information about the current GPS state.

Satellite icon color says everything about GPS state

GRAY

GPS/Location engine is in an initiation state. It happens right after start the app.

GREEN

GPS works OK and getting data from satellites. Navigation can work correct. The icon is animated for every GPS update. You should see green waves. When animation stops it means GPS updates not incoming. After click the icon you can check when was the last GPS update by reading lines timestamp and last update.

YELLOW

GPS/Location is enabled but data from satellites not arriving for 20 seconds at least. GPS data is out of date. Usually it happens in a building. Generally under roof or in deep forest. It means a poor signal from satellites. User should find a place with a view of the sky. You should wait for new gps updates (green icon and white text values) to continue navigation. Distance and speed of walk will be incorrect till new gps updates. However, direction of walk will be still correct because it is managed by compass sensor and not GPS signal.

RED

Some error happened. The most met issues:

1) Location permissions was not granted by user.

2) Location engine is disabled. User has to turn on Location in watch’s settings.

Note: if you Location is enabled in watch’s settings and the app says it isn’t you should restart Location in settings or restart for a second your watch.

Guide for Samsung Galaxy Watch version

Preconditions

  1. Use it outdoors. The application should be used outdoors, as there is no GPS signal from the satellites under the roof. On their basis, compass directions are calculated. Samsung watches still lack a magnetometer sensor, so the app uses GPS data.
  2. Turn on GPS. You must turn on Location / GPS in the watch’s Settings / Connections / Location. Sometimes the app tells you about it and allows you to take the user to these settings.
  3. Wait for a while. After approx. 1-3 minutes, the application should work, i.e. show the directions of the world. As it is a GPS compass you need to get move so that the application can correctly calculate the direction of movement. The waiting time after turning on the GPS is required by the platform itself to configure the satellites. This only happens once until the GPS is turned back on. ATTENTION! If the compass does not show directions, you need to turn off the watch for one second. Sometimes some applications like Workout or Samsung services can block access to GPS for other applications and a quick restart of the watch does the trick.

Navigation

After starting the application, the first view is shown with a compass and the position of the sun in the sky. The sun moves from right (east) to left (west). The sunrise time is on the top right and sunset time is on the right. If we only want to use a compass and sun info then we don’t have to do anything else.

To navigate to a place where you are, e.g. a shelter or a car – you need to click the plus icon on the right. The location will be added to the list of so-called waypoints (our locations). Then click the icon on the left with the map marker and enter the list of locations. You choose yours. If it was added last, it will be at the top of the list. You can change its name to a more specific one. About that later. You selected the location and the application goes to the navigation view. View with radar animation. The center of the radar is our location, that is, the current position. The red point is you. Initially, both points will overlap. When we move away, the red point (your position) will move away. The upper white arrow (12 o’clock) always shows the direction of your march (the road ahead). Navigation is intuitive. If the red point is to the right of the center of the disc (shelter or car), it means that you have to turn left. If the red point is above the center of the target, it means that the goal of our march is behind our backs – we must turn back.

Most of the elements on the top of the navigation are clickable and various important information are provided, such as how much is left to the destination, walking speed, etc. From the navigation view with the HW Back button, we return to the list, then to the compass, then exit the application. In the navigation view (radar), we can immediately exit the application by a finger gesture downwards. The application will ask if you really want to exit navigation.

We can manage waypoints on the list of waypoints. We choose a waypoint on the list and keep our finger on it longer. A menu with options appears. There we can, for example, change the name of the waypoint to a more expressive, eg a shelter, house, etc. We can also send our waypoint to the phone or computer via Share option or manually edit the waypoint.

To share a waypoint, you need to install an application for Share operation in the Tizen system. Our Blueft app is highly recommended. It is a free application and supports sending and receiving files via Bluetooth. Blueft may also be useful in the future, e.g. to send music to a watch, pictures or e.g. documents. Click button for Blueft in Samsung Apps Store below.

Preconditions

  1. Use this app outdoor. The application should be used outdoors, as there is no GPS signal from the satellites under the roof. On their basis, the app calculate direction to walk, distance between start and target point and walking speed. Despite of built-in compass sensor the app needs GPS to mark geographical start and end point.
  2. Turn on Location/GPS. You must turn on Location / GPS in the watch’s Settings / Location. The app tells you about disabled Location. You should exit the app and turn Location on in watch’s settings.
  3. Wait for a while to get GPS fix. After approx. 1-3 minutes, the GPS signal should be available. The app needs GPS position to mark your start position (waypoint). This only happens once until the GPS is turned back on.
